Translator Guidelines and Covenant

The English Language Evangelism event depends on effective, devoted, and talented translators that will partner with us in the cause of Christ. It is essential that the precise messages of the teachers, the school director, and the evangelist are communicated to the non-English speakers. It is just as important that precise translation is provided when the local language is translated into English.

In an effort to avoid misunderstanding and to assure the maximum effectiveness of the entire team, these guidelines must be observed. 

1. Translators are to keep in mind that they are working involved in Kingdom work “as unto the Lord.” Therefore they shall not at any time use speech or language that is unwholesome or does not honor God.

2. Translators shall dress in a manor that honors and glorifies God. This usually requires casual, but semi-professional attire. During church services, clothing appropriate for that specific church must be worn. At all other times: 

a. Men are to have a neat appearance appropriate for the specific task they are doing. 

b. Women are not to wear clothing that exposes skin at the waist, that displays cleavage, is excessively tight fitting, or skirts that do not reach the knees.

3. Translators may not at any time become involved with a student of the opposite sex, or a team member of the opposite sex. This is forbidden and is cause for immediate dismissal. 

4. Translators are to never enter the sleeping quarters of team members of the opposite sex even by invitation.

5. Translators are not to be out of the church grounds or ministry site alone with a team member of the opposite sex. There must always be a third person. It is the translator’s responsibility to make sure the team leader is aware that they are leaving the church grounds or ministry site.

6. Translators are to make themselves available before and during registration. They are to be available at least 30 minutes prior to classes or services to help team members communicate with students. Translators are to sit with or near the basic teachers during assembly time. They should never be guilty of talking to a student, another translator, or any other person when someone is speaking before the assembled group.

7. Translators are to make themselves available to all teachers during class time, but especially to the basic teachers. We expect them to be proactive in giving assistance so the teacher does not have to interrupt class to find a translator for assistance.

8. Translators will eat with the team, be at devotional time with the team, and sleep in the same facility with the team members unless other arrangements have been made with the school director.

9. Translators may not decide for whom they will translate and for whom they will not translate.

10. Translators should know that the team could not function without them and that they are greatly needed and appreciated.
