How to Effectively Share Your Testimony in Another Culture

1.       Be prepared:

a.       Pray about it.

b.       Write it out.

c.       “Scrub” it.

d.       Practice it.

e.       Time it.

f.         Repeat c. – e.

  2.       Be sensitive to the Holy Spirit:

a.       You may or may not be prompted to share your testimony.

b.       Do not force it.

c.       Do not turn the class into a Bible lesson.

3.       Ask permission:

a.       You are using their class time.

b.       You are there to teach English.

c.       You are not a celebrity.

4.       Be Brief:

a.       You have a total of 6 minutes, including translation.

b.       You are taking away from their English speaking practice.

c.       You are not a celebrity.

5.       Be Concise:

a.       “Scrub” out church lingo.

b.       “Scrub” out non-essential facts.

c.       Stick to the basics of the salvation experience.

d.       You are not a celebrity.

6.       Make a Definite Return to English Class:

a.       Make it clear that English is a priority.

b.       Invite them to ask questions – later.

7.       Review the Witnessing Translation Guide.

a.       The students do not know church ritual.

b.       The students do not know Bible terms.

c.       The students are not fluent in the English language.

8.       Effectively Use the Translator.

a.       Advanced classes should not need a translator.

b.       Basic, Beginner, and Intermediate classes should use a translator.

c.       Translation avoids misunderstanding.

d.       Avoid long sentences.

e.       Avoid idioms.

9.       Elements of an Effective Testimony

a.      Avoid controversial or distracting terms and subjects (i.e. divorce).

b.      Do not “wow them with your wickedness”.

c.      Do tell them how you discovered your need.

d.      Do tell them how you heard about Christ.

e.      Do tell them how you responded to Christ.

f.        Do tell them how you yielded to being changed.
