Just outside the mountain town of El Crucero,
Nicaragua (about a one hour drive from Managua)you will find
the Diaz family, Nicolas and Karla and their four children
Emerson, Jociel, Hazel and Eric.
They live in a modest, very typical Nicaraguan house. The whole family is
devoted to Jesus Christ and to living out His example to the
world. |

Some years ago, they
began to feed and clothe a few of the street children that lived in
their town. Soon, they were
giving a home to twenty-two children (from age 3 to 16) and feeding and
clothing several others. In the fall of 2007, there were more than fifty
children receiving 24-hour or day-care from the Diaz family.
Using only their own
meager resources and what little is donated to them by compassionate
Christians, Nicolas and Karla and their family feed, bathe, clothe, and
provided daily care and teaching to these unfortunate children.
They are continually improving their home and have been able to acquire
some surrounding property and add some small buildings.
Their vision is to provide a home for as many as space and
resources allow. In addition to
giving the children the basics of life, their care will include
spiritual training, education and occupational training.
Basics of Life
Their home is adequate to provide a healthy living place
for a number of children in need. However, during the last months
they have added much needed floor space and made great improvements.
These include tiled floor, painted walls, additional toilets and showers
and repaired roof. What was the one-room pre-school has been
expanded to include not only a room for pre-school, but large bedrooms
for the boys and girls and a large kitchen.
Our project includes financial support for building additional rooms and
cottages for housing these children that would
provide a safe, secure, and healthy living environment. Ongoing expenses for clothing, health needs, clean water,
food, and transportation are included in our plans.
Eventually, we want to provide a reliable, safe vehicle (a
15-passenger
van) that will help the Diaz family transport the children, go shopping,
and travel to church.
Spiritual Training
The Diaz family already provides daily Bible teaching and
prayer time for the children.
Due to their transportation limitations, they cannot take the
children into Managua for church each week. Instead, they provide worship
and praise for the children in their home three or four times each week.
Our project includes the supply of
teaching aids and materials to facilitate the spiritual growth of the
children, at an age appropriate level.
Education
The cost of mandatory uniforms and school supplies for public
school is out of reach for many Nicaraguan families. This doesn’t stop the Diaz
family. They are committed
to providing an education to each of the children in their care.
They provide pre-school every day for the youngest children. Several children from the
neighborhood join in, giving them many students, with more waiting to
join as space and resources allow.
The older children attend a local elementary school and high
school. They are required
to wear uniforms, which cost about $20 for shirt/pants or blouse/skirt
sets. They also are required to wear proper shoes (not sandals),
which cost about $10 per pair.
Our project includes the purchase and
maintenance of mandatory uniforms and supplies for each child and the
expenses for conducting the pre-school.
If funds become available, we will consider paying the required
government fees to allow the pre-school to expand.
Occupational Training
Each child would be allowed to stay with the Diaz family until
they complete high school (about age seventeen. Each child will need a skill
that will allow them to
find a job that will pay a living wage.
Our project includes plans to provide a
computer or two for computer skill training, the cost of certain trade
training, and the teaching of English.
We are asking for your help.
Even a small gift each month will help us complete
this project. Ministry
trips are being planned for construction, children’s programs and
health clinics.
